This latest iteration of the iconic RT series offers a compelling package for long-distance riders seeking comfort without compromising agility.

Sleek Design Meets Functional Ergonomics

The R 1300 RT showcases a streamlined aesthetic, featuring a flatter tank ramp and a redesigned front end that reduces visual bulk. Aerodynamically optimized fairings with integrated side wings enhance airflow and provide adjustable weather protection. The handlebars are now wider, flatter, and positioned further forward, promoting a more active riding posture. Seat height is adjustable, ranging from 780 mm to 860 mm, catering to various rider preferences.

Standard features include side cases, and for those seeking additional storage, BMW offers options like the Comfort Passenger Package, which adds heated seats, grips, and a backrest, as well as an electrically operated Variable Luggage System with up to 33 liters of storage, interior lighting, and USB-C charging ports.

The flowing lines that once defined the RT have been replaced by more linear elements, making the bike appear smaller.

Weight is up by a mere 4 pounds but a range of new technologies including forward and rear facing radar and the latest in chassis controls are now available.

Protection from the elements and rider ergonomics have long been a hallmark of the BMW RT Series. With larger adjustable side flairs that direct airflow away or towards the rider, the trend of continual improvement continues.

Powertrain and Performance

At the heart of the R 1300 RT lies a new 1,300 cc Boxer engine, delivering 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. The engine's compact design allows the transmission unit to be positioned beneath it, saving space and reducing drivetrain weight by 6.5 kg.

An optional Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) offers fully automatic clutching and shifting, with the flexibility for manual intervention. This system adapts gear shifts based on the rider's style, enhancing the touring experience.

Advanced Suspension and Braking

The R 1300 RT features an updated steel sheet metal main frame and an aluminum lattice tube subframe, providing increased stiffness and improved handling. The EVO Telelever front and EVO Paralever rear suspension systems offer 5.9 inches of front travel and 6.2 inches in the rear, ensuring stability and comfort.

Braking is managed by dual 310 mm front discs with 4-piston radially mounted calipers and a 285 mm rear disc with a 2-piston caliper. The Fully Integral ABS Pro system comes standard, activating both front and rear brakes simultaneously and optimizing performance for each riding mode.

Technology and Connectivity

A 10.25-inch color TFT display serves as the central hub for navigation, media, and bike settings. The newly developed Connectivity Hub allows seamless integration with accessories like heated vests and offers a split-screen view for multitasking.

Safety features include Dynamic Traction Control, Engine Drag Torque Control, and Dynamic Cruise Control as standard. Optional upgrades encompass Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Collision Warning, Lane Change Warning, and Rear End Collision Warning, enhancing rider confidence on long journeys.

BWW has long offered some of the best technology to enhance the riding experience. A new electronically adjustable chassis changes the proportions and rake angle, making the bike more agile or relaxed depending on riding conditions.

Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) with fully automated clutch operation and manual or automated shifting for an enhanced motorcycling experience is available as optional equipment.

Riding Impressions

According to BMW Motorcycle Owners of America, the R 1300 RT impresses with its balance of power and comfort. The new engine provides smooth acceleration, while the advanced suspension systems effortlessly absorb road imperfections. The ergonomic enhancements, including the adjustable seat and handlebar positions, reduce rider fatigue on extended trips.

As noted by a few journalists, the only possible issue with the new BMW R1300RT design is how the windshield looks slightly odd from some angles.

Standard or expandable side bags are available. This latest version is not only tied into the central locking system but is powered and includes interior lighting and a USB-C charger in the left side case.

The ASA system offers a seamless shifting experience and adapts to various riding styles and conditions. Combined with the bike's comprehensive safety features and connectivity options, the R 1300 RT is a top-tier touring motorcycle.

Thieves Are Stealing Expensive F-150 Super Duty Taillights

A new unintended consequence of adding all of the driver’s assistance technology to today’s vehicles has arisen. Thieves keep stealing F-150 Super Duty taillight assemblies. The problem has become so widespread that an anti-theft kit is available for pre-order and will ship in late November. It should be noted that taillight assemblies for the F-150 Super Duty cost an astounding $2,700 to replace.

An unexpected downside of modern driver assistance technology has surfaced, highlighting a new vulnerability in high-tech vehicles: a sharp increase in thefts of taillight assemblies from Ford’s F-150 Super Duty trucks. These taillights, once simple lighting elements, are now packed with advanced sensors and sophisticated electronics essential to features like blind-spot monitoring, trailer detection, and rear cross-traffic alerts. As a result, they can cost as much as $2,700 to replace, turning them into a highly profitable target for thieves.

The thefts are often quick and efficient, sometimes taking less than two minutes to complete, and leave truck owners with costly repairs and compromised safety systems. The trend has become so prevalent that it has prompted the development of a specialized anti-theft kit. Designed to deter or prevent the removal of the taillight units, the kit is already available for pre-order, with the first shipments expected to go out in late November. This growing issue underscores the unintended consequences of embedding expensive, easily accessible tech into vehicle exteriors.

No Longer Elementary My Dear Watson

When it comes to maintaining today’s sensor-rich vehicles, mechanics are becoming IT detectives as they spend more time analyzing the cause and effects of increasingly complicated vehicle component failures.

When it comes to maintaining today’s sensor-rich vehicles, mechanics are becoming IT detectives as they spend more time analyzing the cause and effects of increasingly complicated vehicle component failures.

Modern mechanics face an ever-evolving landscape as vehicles become increasingly complex, particularly with the rise of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Keeping up requires constant training and certification, and that investment of time and expertise is driving up labor costs across the industry. At the same time, parts prices are skyrocketing—especially when those parts are embedded with sensitive electronics.

Consider the example highlighted in this video: diagnosing and replacing a leaking taillight on a Ford F-150 pickup truck cost a staggering $5,600. Why? Because the taillight houses critical ADAS components, including blind spot sensors, which failed when water entered the assembly. What used to be a simple $0.30 bulb swap from the local auto parts store is now a high-stakes repair involving diagnostics, module communication checks, and complex disassembly.

And remember—this is a Ford F-150, not a high-end German or Italian exotic. The growing sophistication of systems like MS-CAN (Medium Speed Controller Area Network) means even seemingly routine repairs can require deep technical know-how. Smaller shops often lack the specialized equipment or training needed to interpret the web of interdependent sensors, modules, and wiring. This makes repair timelines harder to predict and custom requirements more difficult to meet.

A huge thank-you goes out to today’s automotive technicians—true hybrids of detective and IT expert. Your patience, curiosity, and dedication are keeping this increasingly digital fleet on the road.

MOVEMENT: TRACKING NOTABLE MOVEMENTS IN MOBILITY

Cadillac, Rolls-Royce, and GMC offer ultra-luxury EVs. Thoughts on a preferred mobility future and designing across the pond.

Originally published: December 22, 2022

Cadillac Set to Produce The “Cadillac” of EVs

Cadillac will begin production of the Celestiq in limited quantities starting in 2023. The bespoke luxury electric vehicle will feature a personalization service similar to those offered by Ferrari and Rolls-Royce. Vehicles will be hand-assembled in GM’s pre-production design facility. The Celestiq purchase price is anticipated to run over $300,000.

Setting the Standard of The World Once More

Decades ago, “The Cadillac of X” was used globally to refer to products at the top of their class. The Celestiq is Cadillac’s latest effort to recapture its once-vaunted “Standard of the World” status. Some of Cadillac’s new design DNA, which debuted on the Cadillac Lyriq, has been applied to the Celestiq. However, due to the long and low dimensions of the Celestiq, the elements have been modified and stretched dramatically, appearing as distinct yet familiar forms. The front of both vehicles uses vertically stacked, gem-like light modules and back-lit font facias that support animated lighting sequences with linear patterns. In the rear, prominent vertical brake lighting, a hallmark of the Cadillac Escalade, is featured.

Building On Innovative Concepts

The Celestiq display seamlessly serves both driver and passenger.

Technology is highlighted within the Celestiq interior. It features large displays that accommodate both the driver and passenger. For those that prefer physical interactions, a centrally located angled display accompanies a rotary input knob. Otherwise, physical controls are kept to a minimum. Celestiq’s display layout is similar to the one shown in the Byton M-Byte SUV concept, although it does not feature a steering wheel display. The passenger display can only be viewed while seated directly in front of it, minimizing driver distraction. Above, a multilayer glass roof allows different amounts of light to enter the cabin. Rear displays and touch panels, along with the world’s first ClimateSense™ individualized four-zone microclimate system, ensure that luxury abounds regardless of one's seating position. Rich, linear hand stitching adorns the multifunction seating.

Referencing the Past to Define the Future

Cadillac has done an excellent job with the Celestiq. The design references bold designs from the past while being squarely focused on the future. Cadillac references futurism in its promotions. A design approach informed by futurism is reflected in the Celestiq and other recent vehicles, including the ELR, a hybrid plug-in that evokes aspects of the futurist Syd Mead’s vehicle designs. Navigating the future of a brand over decades involves celebrating elements that have social relevance and significance. For Cadillac, the vertical tail lamps we know today pay homage to the tail fins of yesteryear. Overall, the Celestiq represents a bold new North Star for the brand, one that is shining brightly again.

Long and progressive design. Future vehicle envisioned by Syd Mead.

Rolls-Royce Rolls Out The New Spectre EV

Rolls-Royce introduced the all-new Spectre EV in October 2022 to keep the brand relevant. The first deliveries are expected to arrive in the fourth quarter of 2023. The Spectre is the brand’s first production electric vehicle. Styled similarly to the Wraith coupe, the Spectre incorporates several established brand elements and styling cues into its new electrified offering.

A Conservative Entry

Luxury automotive manufacturers are sensing a void at the top of the hyper-luxury electric vehicle market. This is evidenced by the Cadillac Celestiq’s celestial $300,000 price point and the Rolls-Royce Spectre’s frightening starting price of $400,000, respectively. One can imagine Bentley, now offering plug-in hybrid versions of its high-end luxury vehicles, will soon introduce its battery-electric hyperluxury vehicle. The range for the Spectre is estimated to be around 260 miles, which frankly does not even compare to current luxury EVs, such as the Tesla Model S or the Lucid Air. Rolls-Royce is likely to leverage advanced driver assistance features from its parent company, BMW, which also lags behind current market leaders.

Admirable Physical and Digital Detailing

Rich and novel material cues in Spectre display.

The approach towards integrating technology within the cabin is similar to that found in the Cadillac Celestiq, with prominent driver and passenger displays. However, the Spectre is slightly more restrained, lacking a full-width display and a lower center touchscreen. Instead, Rolls-Royce designers retained some traditional physical controls. Driver and passenger displays are not as seamlessly presented as in the Celestiq. An iconic analog clock module separates the two display zones. However, interface graphic elements artfully integrate skeuomorphic design cues with subtle references to physical dials of the past. This is enhanced through the skillful use of shadows while avoiding cliché visuals like chrome rings in the instrument cluster. Further shading, layering, and particle effects enrich the cockpit's digital aesthetics.

Forms of Heritage in Motion

Rolls-Royce has characteristically paid meticulous attention to the Spectre’s details. For example, 830 hours of wind tunnel testing went into modernizing the famous Spirit of Ecstasy figure that adorns the hoods of Rolls-Royce vehicles. From a historical perspective, it is interesting to note the similarities between the Rolls-Royce robe-draped Spirit of Ecstacy figure and Cadillac’s Flying Goddess hood figure. It remains to be seen which of these ultra-luxury vehicles will lay claim to defining the “standard of the world” in the coming electric mobility era. Here’s hoping that some of the craft and beauty found in these vehicles will influence other, more attainable offerings in the future.

MORE ELECTRIFYING EXCLUSIVITY

Electrifying the Truck Segment

The electric truck segment remains energized by new entries. The GMC Sierra EV Denali represents a serious step forward in truck design. Arguably one of the best-looking electric vehicles (EVs) yet, the GMC Sierra EV Denali offers unprecedented electrified truck luxury. Given a likely starting price of over $100,000 for the First Edition model, this vehicle is another example of electrified exclusivity. While the cost of the First Edition model is likely to be prohibitively high, other models will follow at more accessible prices.

The First Edition is set to begin production in early 2024. With the ability to power accessories, a home, or to lend a charge to other EVs, this GMC EV truck entry appears quite capable. With over 400 miles of predicted range, an innovative mid-gate that folds to accommodate longer loads, and the ability to charge up to 100 miles in 10 minutes on a fast charger, GMC is moving the truck segment forward with this bold new premium electric truck entry.

MORE MOVEMENT

Helping to Shape a Preferred Mobility Future

While it is challenging to predict the future, observing persistent human needs and technological progression can help align creative action with people’s future hopes and needs. Science fiction films, future vision work, and concept vehicles are ways authors, film directors, and vehicle designers have sought to solicit feedback on future concepts and influence the future.

While at IDEO, I collaborated with many of the world’s leading automotive companies, including those with advanced research facilities in Silicon Valley. Over several years, common themes and needs emerged repeatedly across our work.

These needs, societal pressures, sustainability concerns, new business models, and emerging technologies inspired a small team at IDEO to craft the Future of Automobility series, spurring conversations and thinking about how we might move people, things, and spaces by the year 2030.

In addition to the factors mentioned above, the state of disruptive shared mobility services and autonomous vehicle work at that time was considered. A follow-up chapter was created in 2017 that focused more intensely on shared mobility and how we might design vehicles to encourage shared mobility and moving better together.

As the mobility industry advances, certain aspects of the work are already beginning to take shape. Cruise and Waymo have launched driverless ride services in several markets. There are also similarities between the vehicle featured in the 2017 “Moving Together” chapter and Google’s Waymo/Geely vehicle. Both designs address persistent needs, including ease of ingress and egress, personalized zones, and connectivity. Both vehicles have clear lines of sight and a means for communicating vehicle intent.

Here’s to continued progress in moving from future vision work toward a safer and more accessible future of mobility!

MEMORY BANK

Dateline 1996: Designing Across the Pond

It was January 6th, 1996. I arrived at a characteristically gray and drizzly Heathrow airport to start a three-month creative sabbatical at IDEO London. Years earlier, while in graduate school, I had spotted some compelling product design work done by the firm and could not shake the idea of someday working there.

I distinctly recall my first weekend in London. After exploring the city extensively on foot, I caught a bit of BBC programming on the TV. During my first jet-lagged Saturday afternoon there, I watched a darts competition program and a fascinating shepherd dog handling competition. How quaint, I thought. But as I took in a few commercials, my tired eyes were opened to just how much more advanced design was in Britain.

I first noticed things were slightly different just as I exited the plane. Well-designed signage and excellent directional mapping within the tube made wayfinding easy. Posters and placards covering walls around Camden Town were heavily influenced by Neville Brody and other remarkable designers, thus bringing design literacy right out to street level. But it was the supposed mainstream adverts on television that stood out. I was surprised by the diverse design approaches that Ford, a quintessentially American yet globally recognized company, employed across two regions.

Comparing two contemporary commercials promoting the mid-1990s Ford Probe illustrates the two worlds of design I was straddling. I was stunned by the quality of the UK Ford Probe commercial. It included everything I was passionate about as a young designer. A perfectly coordinated soundtrack, sophisticated motion graphics with rich, layered scientific diagrams, crisp and clear aspirational messaging, and even a reference to Area 51. It all led to deep intrigue in just 30 seconds. Given the uninspiring state of most American car commercials, which focused on promoting discount prices, it was as if I had indeed been flown off to the moon.

Take a look at the two commercials below and see for yourself. Like Neil Armstrong’s first footprints on the moon, that 1996 Ford Probe advert made a lasting impression on me. I knew I would have to up my design game if this were how everyday items like the European Ford Probe were marketed. And lest the Ford Probe commercial had been just a one-off, I soon encountered the Ford Mondeo “Senses” commercial, proving that a higher level of sophisticated design was the norm in Europe.

I will always be grateful for that time in the UK, where I learned and practiced design in the dynamic environment of the mid-1990s, when even car commercials could transport us to another world.

What advertisements have inspired you over the years?

New EV Options and Harley Davidson Pan America

More electric mobility options are on the horizon. Harley Davidson debuts the Pan America.

MOVEMENT: TRACKING NOTABLE MOVEMENTS IN MOBILITY

April saw new EV models announced or shipping, including the GMC Hummer SUV EV and the Polestar 2.

Companies try to balance the Osbourne Effect (customers deferring or canceling current orders in favor of upcoming EV models). Paradoxically, studies show that 1 in 5 California EV owners have returned to gas vehicles due to charging infrastructure challenges.

GMC Introduces a Electric Super Truck in SUV Form

GM has introduced the GMC Hummer EV SUV, adding a new form factor to the vehicle lineup that utilizes GM’s Ultium battery system. The company also confirmed its plans to produce an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup on the platform. Promotional materials highlight the benefits of four-wheel steering in urban contexts vs. the off-road prowess demonstrated with the pickup truck launch. A few shots show the vehicle in an off-road setting, although few SUV models are likely destined for that type of use.

For more on the GMC EV Truck, check out this bivouac article.

The vehicle features the same infinite roof with removable transparent sky panels as the pickup truck. Thankfully, designers thought about creating a way for those panels to be stored safely in the frunk. In place of a rear truck bed, the SUV offers rear drop glass to enhance the open-air feeling. Like its GMC Electric super pickup truck counterpart, owners use DC fast charging to charge nearly 100 miles of electric range in 10 minutes. GM projects a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds for the Hummer EV SUV, or half a second slower than the Hummer EV pickup truck.

The availability of the GMC Hummer EV SUV is projected for early 2023. For those that can’t wait until then or prefer the pickup truck form factor, the GMC Hummer EV super truck will be available in the Fall of 2021.

Polestar 2 Available for Press Reviews

Reviews of the long-awaited Polestar 2 electric vehicle began to be released in April. It is proving to be a solid new offering, launching alongside several other new EVs due for release this year. As the world’s first Android OS car, the Polestar 2 benefits from tight integration with the Android Auto interface. Keeping with the vehicle’s minimalist aesthetic, the Android Auto interface features clear touch zones and icons on a tall touchscreen. Usability is quite good, with extensive integration of Google Voice technology. As expected, the navigation system integrated helpful information related to electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

The vehicle is available in several configurations, including the launch edition. Both front and all-wheel drive versions are available. The all-wheel drive, dual-motor version has a range of 233 miles (EPA) or 292 miles (WLTP) and a zero-60 time of around 4.5 seconds, made possible via a 78 kWh battery comprised of 27 modules. The cargo storage capacity is rated at 440 liters, encompassing both the rear cargo area and the frunk.

Few will dispute Volvo’s reputation for building solid and safe cars. Their admirable commitment to hybrid vehicles and fully electric mobility is starting to bear fruit. That said, even with solid offerings like the Polestar 2 now shining bright, whether or not catching up with Tesla is written in the stars remains to be seen.

Lincoln Zephyr Makes a Return in China

The Lincoln Zephyr Reflection concept vehicle debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 19th, 2021. Beyond resurrecting the Zephyr name, the concept carries distinctive styling, hinting at what the future could hold for Lincoln, but likely only in China.

That said, it is intriguing to consider how some of Zephyr’s design cues might influence future Lincoln models stateside. The Zephyr Reflection looks like something that one would expect to be directly competing with the likes of Lucid Air.

The bold presence of a Byton-like full cockpit display and a revised version of the Lincoln waterfall grill suggest that both user experience and vehicle exterior design are advancing overseas for the brand.

Unfortunately, there are no indications of possible powertrains. Still, the overall quality of the Zephyr reflects well upon Lincoln and is miles ahead of many concepts designed for and in China that appeared just a few years ago.

Harley-Davidson Pan America Reviews Rev Up

Reviews of Harley-Davidson’s new Pan America adventure touring bike are now being published from various corners of the globe. The bike represents a huge step forward for the long-heralded company, which has seen sales flatten in recent years. Combined with the company’s electric bike, the Livewire, Harley-Davidson’s lineup of motorcycles shows more innovation as part of a much-needed effort to attract new and younger buyers.

The Pan America checks many boxes needed to compete in motorcycling’s hottest adventure bike segment,. In fact, regarding weight and horsepower, it edges out a few stalwarts. That is quite an achievement because competition is stiff in this segment, including long-time perennial award winners such as BMW’s R 1250 GS Adventure or KTM’s remarkable KTM 1290 Super Adventure R.

Harley-Davidson

The 1252cc Revolution Max engine produces 94 pound-feet of peak torque and 150 hp. Weight is a key concern when designing long-distance adventure motorcycles, as they are inherently large due to the expectations of their riders, which include running at high speeds with full panniers and a pillion passenger. As a result, a magnesium engine housing and aluminum fuel tank were chosen. Sections of the frame are also aluminum. The shipping weight is claimed to be 503 pounds, while engineers cite a wet weight of 534 pounds. This weight reduction partly enables the Pan America to achieve a 48 mpg city/highway fuel mileage rating. Covering ground at 135 mph is rated and possible with full gear bags and a passenger on board. After all, it is a long way from Prudhoe Bay, U.S.A. Ushuaia, Argentina.

Ergonomics, controls, and displayed content appear less innovative and up-to-date compared to the competition. In particular, some of the information on Pan America’s display may be too small for on-the-go scanning. BMW’s rotary multi-controller continues to set the standard for ease of navigating display content in the segment. That said, the more traditional five-way controllers on each handlebar likely have a less steep initial learning curve for most riders.

The bike’s aesthetics are spot on, with hefty proportions. Cutting-edge features, such as the main lighting fixture, are thoughtfully juxtaposed with more traditional elements, like the silhouette of the fuel tank. If the orange and grey color scheme is chosen, the bold colors shift across the tank and facia, nicely breaking up the bike into black, orange, and off-white sections.

Overall, seeing more competition in this already heated segment is fantastic, especially from an American bike manufacturer. This effort, combined with the LiveWire electric bike, shows that Harley-Davidson is investing in dynamic new forms of mobility for the motorcycling market. Let’s hope this is just the start of more innovative efforts from Milwaukee's talented designers and engineers.

Revelling in the Revel for 2021

As a designer, every once in a while, you see a company that creates something that you hoped one of your clients would take on as an outcome of your work. Such is the case with the 2021 Winnebago Revel.

As a designer, every once in a while, you see a company that creates something that you hoped one of your clients would take on as an outcome of your work. Such is the case with the 2021 Winnebago Revel. Winnebago has been continually improving the 4x4-capable Class B recreational vehicle since its launch a few years ago. This is the sign of a company that cares about its customers. Drawing on numerous insights gained from speaking with current Revel owners, the 2021 Revel features several thoughtful updates, along with one major game changer.

Among some smaller, yet still meaningful updates, the table in the sliding door area is now cable-mounted. The angle can be easily adjusted to accommodate various needs, depending on the level of your campsite. Winnebago also moved the refrigerator (which ideally would be a larger unit with a larger freezer) to be forward-facing. This provides easy access from outside the coach, making loading easier. The rear passenger seat now has one three-point seatbelt, and the bed conversion feature has been removed based on consumer feedback. A more flexible lagoon-style table has been added along with a small but functional in-floor storage area behind the driver’s seat.

Counter space is cleaned up and expanded by including a removable induction cooking appliance that neatly stores in the upper galley drawer. This provides more counter space, and Revel owners can cook outside the vehicle on the side table, which was apparently another popular request from current Revel owners. A 110 outlet close to the sliding door shows further attention to detail. This changed layout helps keep cooking odors and moisture from accumulating inside the RV. Under-bed lighting in the rear gear garage area, an added storage bag under the height-adjustable bed, and various storage nets located throughout the rear of the coach are nice additional touches.

The most significant change for 2021 is the addition of two large-capacity lithium batteries. They are located inside the rear gear garage of the coach. This welcome update enables the vehicle's rear air conditioning unit to run for extended periods using only the lithium batteries. This is a breakthrough for those RVing in warmer climates. Lichtsinn RV, a large Winnebago Dealer, recently conducted a test on a hot and humid Iowa day that reached a maximum temperature of 94 degrees. They were able to run the new Coleman air conditioner on and off using the thermostat for just about 6 hours, keeping the coach interior at a comfortable 75 degrees.

The batteries are stored under a nicely designed and vented panel on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Thermostatically monitored heat blankets ensure that the batteries will function and can be charged when operating in colder climates. The addition of a dedicated alternator in the engine bay helps top up the lithium batteries in about 2 hours of highway driving. Rooftop solar panel support and the option to expand solar charging capability with exterior panels add more boondocking charging capability. Another benefit of using lithium batteries and incorporating them into the Revel is weight savings. Winnebago saved so much weight by switching from nickel batteries to lithium ones that they were able to reintroduce a spare tire, which had previously been eliminated.

Ground clearance has also been significantly improved. Finally, the water tank has also been moved inboard on the passenger side of the garage bay. While the city hookup is now located inside the rear of the vehicle, rather than on the exterior side, which may be inconvenient for those who rely on city hookups in campsites, the water panel is far more intuitive. These changes make the 2021 Winnebago Revel even more capable of facing the extremes of all-season RVing. We designed a similar system with one of our clients several years ago. It remains to be seen whether they will proceed with our work. Clearly, to Winnebago’s credit, they see the value in such an approach. It is great to see them listening to consumers, which has empowered them to create a segment-defining vehicle designed for more adventurous 4x4 camping and to keep it current and desirable with meaningful updating.

If you are interested in learning more about the Winnebago Revel, check out Winnebago’s site. Colonial RV and Lichtsinn RV dealerships also consistently offer nice overview videos. Perhaps the most extensive overview available at the time of posting this entry is the one from Lichtsinn, which provides a helpful 1-hour and 25-minute orientation of the revised model for 2021, available to view here.
