Tesla Drops Radar, Introducing Tesla Vision
Camera-Based Driving System
As noted in Notaslaapp and widely covered in the media in May, Tesla has officially removed radar from their cars coming off the production line in the US. All new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced in May 2021 or later will no longer come with radar. Instead, the cars will rely entirely on Tesla's vision system for Autopilot and safety features.
This move follows what Elon Musk has been stating about the company’s confidence in camera-based vision systems for some time. Tesla is confident that applying the same visual way of navigating roadways that humans do will ultimately allow their system to evolve faster and accommodate daily driving situations. However, it remains to be proven whether camera-based procedures alone will be sufficient, especially in more challenging weather conditions where vision may be compromised.
Since Tesla is removing radar and not committing to costly LIDAR systems, which Musk has long called “A fool’s errand,” the company will save significantly on sensor costs. Development efforts will also be streamlined as the integration of radar data places a high demand on both software processing power.
Over time, it will be interesting to see whether Tesla’s vision-based system can continue to evolve and adapt. Tesla is optimistic about its ability to continually improve its Autopilot software by integrating aggregated data from its deployed fleet. But perhaps continuous investment in high-resolution road mapping combined with more extensive sensor fusion will be the most effective approach.
GM Super Cruise approved roadway map as of May 2021
While GM’s current map of approved roadways for Super Cruise use resembles a cell phone service coverage map from the late 1990s, the company will undoubtedly continue to fill in key routes as more vehicles with the technology come online. Perhaps a combination of both may ultimately be needed.
Ford Debuts
Electric F-150 Lightning Pickup Truck
On May 19, 2021, in what has to be one of the most significant developments in electric vehicle history, Ford Motor Company introduced the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. The launch event video is posted below. During the presentation, Bill Ford rightfully stated that this is a generational moment for the company, and in many respects, the same can be said for the overall mobility industry.
Congratulations to Lynda Zhang and her entire team at Ford, who appear to have designed a superb vehicle in around three years. Key features of the F-150 Lightning include a zero-to-60 time of approximately 4.5 seconds, over 600 ft-lbs of torque, 400 liters of space in the forward frunk, accommodating up to 400 kg of payload, and four electrical outlets.
CEO Jim Farley also noted that the vehicle can charge a home during power outages for up to three days. Ford has been applying human-centered design to its latest models, such as the F-150 Lightning and Bronco, to incorporate user-centric features.
Ford appears to be making continual progress regarding its Sync offering as well. The F-150 Lightning is available with an optional 15-inch display, and Ford has mentioned that over-the-air updates, or Ford Power-Ups, will allow for continual vehicle improvements. A hands-free driving system, Ford calls Blue Cruise, will also be available.
Pricing starts at $39,975, excluding tax incentives. This price is remarkable, considering the pricing of other electric trucks set to enter the market next year. For example, the GMC HUMMER EV will likely come in over the $100,000 mark for the launch edition,

Tesla Finally Introduces
Camera-Based Driver Monitoring System
Tesla finally introduced a camera-based driver monitoring system. The move comes after several examples of Tesla owners acting with reckless disregard for safety by defeating the current system. Drivers have been photographed sleeping while their cars continue along the freeway. One Tesla owner in the San Francisco Bay Area even posted photos on social media of himself alone in his Tesla riding along a highway while seated in the back of the vehicle.
GM’s Super Cruise system has had a camera-based drive monitoring system from its inception. Combined with hyper-accurate LIDAR mapping of hundreds of thousands of miles of crucial roadways, the system enables drivers to enjoy a hands-free experience for extended periods of travel on approved roads. In head-to-head comparisons, the press, including Motor Trend, has often given the edge to the GM system, which is rolling out across more vehicles soon, including the Cadillac Lyric. Perhaps this move by Tesla will close the gap regarding driver comfort and perceived safety.
Fueling and Charging Stations
of The Future are Here today
In May, Bjørn Nyland provided an excellent overview of one of Circle K’s latest EV charging stations in Norway. Warm and inviting details include accommodations for on-the-go road trip dining, a variety of places to sit in comfort upstairs to refresh and recharge yourself and your phones, and clean restrooms and wifi.
300 kW fast chargers are featured as primary charging stations. The station is equipped with solar panels on its roof. Petrol pumps are also included for legacy vehicles.
It will be fascinating to see how all the real estate devoted to pumping traditional fuels is repurposed in the coming decade or two.

GMC Introduces a Electric Super Truck in SUV Form
GM has introduced the GMC Hummer EV SUV, adding a new form factor to the vehicle lineup that utilizes GM’s Ultium battery system. The company also confirmed its plans to produce an all-electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup on the platform. Promotional materials highlight the benefits of four-wheel steering in urban contexts vs. the off-road prowess demonstrated with the pickup truck launch. A few shots show the vehicle in an off-road setting, although few SUV models are likely destined for that type of use.
For more on the GMC EV Truck, check out this bivouac article.
The vehicle features the same infinite roof with removable transparent sky panels as the pickup truck. Thankfully, designers thought about creating a way for those panels to be stored safely in the frunk. In place of a rear truck bed, the SUV offers rear drop glass to enhance the open-air feeling. Like its GMC Electric super pickup truck counterpart, owners use DC fast charging to charge nearly 100 miles of electric range in 10 minutes. GM projects a 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds for the Hummer EV SUV, or half a second slower than the Hummer EV pickup truck.
The availability of the GMC Hummer EV SUV is projected for early 2023. For those that can’t wait until then or prefer the pickup truck form factor, the GMC Hummer EV super truck will be available in the Fall of 2021.
Polestar 2 Available for Press Reviews
Reviews of the long-awaited Polestar 2 electric vehicle began to be released in April. It is proving to be a solid new offering, launching alongside several other new EVs due for release this year. As the world’s first Android OS car, the Polestar 2 benefits from tight integration with the Android Auto interface. Keeping with the vehicle’s minimalist aesthetic, the Android Auto interface features clear touch zones and icons on a tall touchscreen. Usability is quite good, with extensive integration of Google Voice technology. As expected, the navigation system integrated helpful information related to electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.
The vehicle is available in several configurations, including the launch edition. Both front and all-wheel drive versions are available. The all-wheel drive, dual-motor version has a range of 233 miles (EPA) or 292 miles (WLTP) and a zero-60 time of around 4.5 seconds, made possible via a 78 kWh battery comprised of 27 modules. The cargo storage capacity is rated at 440 liters, encompassing both the rear cargo area and the frunk.
Few will dispute Volvo’s reputation for building solid and safe cars. Their admirable commitment to hybrid vehicles and fully electric mobility is starting to bear fruit. That said, even with solid offerings like the Polestar 2 now shining bright, whether or not catching up with Tesla is written in the stars remains to be seen.

Lincoln Zephyr Makes a Return in China
The Lincoln Zephyr Reflection concept vehicle debuted at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 19th, 2021. Beyond resurrecting the Zephyr name, the concept carries distinctive styling, hinting at what the future could hold for Lincoln, but likely only in China.
That said, it is intriguing to consider how some of Zephyr’s design cues might influence future Lincoln models stateside. The Zephyr Reflection looks like something that one would expect to be directly competing with the likes of Lucid Air.
The bold presence of a Byton-like full cockpit display and a revised version of the Lincoln waterfall grill suggest that both user experience and vehicle exterior design are advancing overseas for the brand.
Unfortunately, there are no indications of possible powertrains. Still, the overall quality of the Zephyr reflects well upon Lincoln and is miles ahead of many concepts designed for and in China that appeared just a few years ago.

Harley-Davidson Pan America Reviews Rev Up
Reviews of Harley-Davidson’s new Pan America adventure touring bike are now being published from various corners of the globe. The bike represents a huge step forward for the long-heralded company, which has seen sales flatten in recent years. Combined with the company’s electric bike, the Livewire, Harley-Davidson’s lineup of motorcycles shows more innovation as part of a much-needed effort to attract new and younger buyers.
The Pan America checks many boxes needed to compete in motorcycling’s hottest adventure bike segment,. In fact, regarding weight and horsepower, it edges out a few stalwarts. That is quite an achievement because competition is stiff in this segment, including long-time perennial award winners such as BMW’s R 1250 GS Adventure or KTM’s remarkable KTM 1290 Super Adventure R.
Harley-Davidson
The 1252cc Revolution Max engine produces 94 pound-feet of peak torque and 150 hp. Weight is a key concern when designing long-distance adventure motorcycles, as they are inherently large due to the expectations of their riders, which include running at high speeds with full panniers and a pillion passenger. As a result, a magnesium engine housing and aluminum fuel tank were chosen. Sections of the frame are also aluminum. The shipping weight is claimed to be 503 pounds, while engineers cite a wet weight of 534 pounds. This weight reduction partly enables the Pan America to achieve a 48 mpg city/highway fuel mileage rating. Covering ground at 135 mph is rated and possible with full gear bags and a passenger on board. After all, it is a long way from Prudhoe Bay, U.S.A. Ushuaia, Argentina.
Ergonomics, controls, and displayed content appear less innovative and up-to-date compared to the competition. In particular, some of the information on Pan America’s display may be too small for on-the-go scanning. BMW’s rotary multi-controller continues to set the standard for ease of navigating display content in the segment. That said, the more traditional five-way controllers on each handlebar likely have a less steep initial learning curve for most riders.
The bike’s aesthetics are spot on, with hefty proportions. Cutting-edge features, such as the main lighting fixture, are thoughtfully juxtaposed with more traditional elements, like the silhouette of the fuel tank. If the orange and grey color scheme is chosen, the bold colors shift across the tank and facia, nicely breaking up the bike into black, orange, and off-white sections.
Overall, seeing more competition in this already heated segment is fantastic, especially from an American bike manufacturer. This effort, combined with the LiveWire electric bike, shows that Harley-Davidson is investing in dynamic new forms of mobility for the motorcycling market. Let’s hope this is just the start of more innovative efforts from Milwaukee's talented designers and engineers.

Canoo Debuts User-Focused Electric Pickup,
Pivots to Target Fleet Sales
This month, Canoo debuted a second vehicle based on its modular electric skateboard platform. This time, the company revealed its take on the pickup truck format. While many commented on the distinctive profile of the vehicle, some covering the release referred to vehicles from the past that share a similar silhouette, including the venerable Mercedes-Benz Unimog and the Volkswagen flatbed transporter.
That said, Canoo’s design included several thoughtful features. A wide range of interior storage and power provisions are included, making it easy to work with power tools, store weekend gear, or tailgate at your favorite team’s location. In witnessing recent tailgate wars between Detroit’s big three (GM’s Multipro Tailgate, Ram’s Multifunction Split Tailgate, and Ford’s Multifunction entry), Canoo’s slide-out bed extender deserves special mention.
It remains to be seen whether Canoo can deliver on its vision overall. Canoo’s range of around 200 miles might limit the vehicle’s appeal in specific segments. For example, many who escape the city for a weekend will put that amount of mileage in on a one-way trip to the trailhead. Many in the EV segment agree that electric vehicles currently in development should aim for a minimum range of 300 miles or more. This is especially true if they target recreational use, such as the Rivian pickup, Tesla’s Cybertruck, or GM’s Hummer EV, where charging provisions in rural areas may be scarce.
It will also be interesting to see how the company transitions from creating compelling concept vehicles and visuals to actual vehicle production. The last few years have proven that great design is not enough. Deep funding, long-term planning, extensive industry knowledge, and expertise in the battery supply chain or manufacturing are needed today to produce vehicles. Companies like NIO, Faraday Future, and Nikola have learned hard lessons in that regard. Even Tesla experienced “production hell” as it initially struggled to produce its successful Model 3 vehicle in significant volumes.
On a late-breaking related note, Canoo CEO Tony Aquila has announced that the partnership with Hyundai appears to have fallen through. Aquila said Canoo will now focus on building and selling its vehicles to commercial fleets and small businesses. This may be a tough pivot for the company to pull off, given that many of the notable attributes of the vehicles debuted thus far have been focused on individual tradespeople or outdoor enthusiasts.
Overall, the company’s customizable platform play is compelling. Let’s hope Canoo hasn’t missed the boat when it comes to actually getting their vehicles to market.
Axopar Premiers
22 Foot Spyder
In December 2020, Axopar premiered one of the most significant boats in its lineup, and reviews are now appearing online. The Axopar 22 Spyder is an entry-level offering to introduce a new generation to boating and the Axopar brand. The company has worked hard to infuse the new Spyder entry with all the things Axopar boats are known for.
The stepped keel, which introduces air turbidity into the water below the boat to reduce friction and improve fuel efficiency, is evident. Due to its wide rear and self-draining architecture, the boat exhibits the kind of inherent stability Axopar boats are known for. Characteristic flat handling is also on offer despite the smaller size of this vessel. Deep insets on the exterior side surfaces of the Spyder add an updated and dynamic feel to the boat, making it appear more agile in the water. Railings surround the inner walkways but are now tucked just below the sight lines, adding an even cleaner look to this model.
For 2021, Axopar has partnered with Jobe, a well-known watercraft accessory company in Europe, to create a special edition of the 22-foot boat. The Axopar x Jobe edition is rendered in the signature Jobe teal color; its layout is tuned for water sports, especially when fitted with the maximum storage layout. Axopar is no stranger to partnering with complementary brands, as evidenced by their collaboration with Brabus on larger boats in their lineup.
Several available layouts allow customization of the Axopar 22 to meet various customer needs. In addition to the aforementioned active Jobe water sports edition, a version with a forward-facing rear bench seat is available. A rear surround seating configuration is also available. Underfloor storage is available on all models in the rear and front areas of the boat. Additionally, a massive storage area is available below the control area. An optional manual or electric toilet and wash basin can be fitted if a freshwater supply is chosen. A rear-hand wand shower is also included in that package.
With this entry, Axopar aims to reach those new to boating through this more accessible form factor. Suitable for towing, it is sure to have broad appeal to those keen to hit the water in something that charts new directions in innovation within the boating industry through thoughtful and technologically innovative design.
The Axopar 22 lists a starting price of 25,900 euros. It can carry seven passengers, has a fuel capacity of 60 gallons, and weighs 2,650 lbs.

More Evidence of
The End of the I.C.E Age
The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX has left a significant impression on both vehicle enthusiasts and the environment. The vehicle with the 001 VIN sold at a recent Barrett-Jackson auction for $410,000. Perhaps this is evidence that internal combustion engine enthusiasts and vehicle investors feel we have reached peak fossil fuel-based horsepower.
Another more obvious sign of the I.C.E. age drawing to a close is that many major OEMs have dramatically shifted their focus toward developing next-generation EVs, rather than investing in future traditional petrol engines.
Perhaps those fans of the environment can take heart in the fact that a GMC Hummer EV pickup with VIN 001 sold for $2.5 million. That and the fact that the Ram TRX and Hummer EV seem to be headed for a similar fate as that of the TREX from the end of the Mesozoic Era.
Jeep and Electrify America
Charge Up the Trailhead
As another indicator of the momentum that vehicle electrification is gaining, as part of the 2021 Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep announced the new Jeep 4xe Charging Network. It will be rolled out at the trailhead locations or in the vicinity of them. Early locations identified for deployment over the coming year include Jeep Badge of Honor trails. In partnership with Electrify America, the company announced that the stations will be directly connected to the power grid or utilize solar power to generate electricity and feature Level 2 (240-volt) chargers.
While this is an incremental step towards extending the reach of electric vehicles, it is welcomed by many. With Level 2 charging, the 17-kilowatt-hour battery pack in the Jeep Wrangler 4xe can be fully recharged in about two hours, delivering up to 21 miles of electric range. Recharge times will be shorter for Wrangler 4xe owners looking to top off the battery pack before heading out on the trail.
Lucid Motors Introduces
Surreal Sound Dolby Atmos System
Lucid Motors announced it will feature Dolby’s Atmos immersive sound technology in its upcoming Lucid Air. The impressive technology empowers creatives to work with sound in three dimensions, giving compositions more acoustic directionality.
Lucid also plans to utilize the directional aspects to convey vehicle status updates more intuitively. Should a seat belt warning relate to the rear right passenger seat, for example, an audible alert can be emitted from that area of the vehicle. While some vehicle manufacturers have been striving to achieve this with previous systems, the Dolby Atmos system offers more advanced capabilities to move sound forward, rearward, and vertically throughout the cabin in less intrusive ways.
This announcement reinforces how Lucid distinguishes its offerings from other next-generation electric vehicles that will launch within the year by including high-end technology focused on the user experience.

Hyundai Debuts
the Ioniq 5
Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 looks set to be a real contender among the next generation of fully electric vehicles launching in the first half of 2021. The striking SUV is the first of several cars based on the company’s new Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).
Although the vehicle appears to be a small hatchback, its dimensions are more generous. The wheelbase is similar to that of a Tesla Model 3. The Ioniq 5’s sharp edges reflect the detailing that originally debuted when Hyundai showed its 45 concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show. While the 45 Concept was more pure and Teutonic in execution, the similarities are profound. The Ionic 5 features more intricate design details around the wheel arches and linear elements along the base of the doors and rear, which are overly detailed and distract from an otherwise clean and bold design. However, overall, the dramatic, clean edges of the 45 Concept emerge as a prevailing design element.
Few design efforts, other than perhaps the Cadillac Converj Concept, which led to the production version of the Cadillac ELR, or the original Audi TT, remain more faithful to the concept vehicles that inspired them. Other design details include lighting, which appears to be pixellated over broader underlying elements.
Hyundai 45 Concept
Hyundai Ioniq 5
The range appears adequate, with Hyundai citing a yet-to-be-certified range of just under 300 miles. The EV supports up to 350 kW DC fast charging and can get up to 80 percent in as little as 18 minutes. Both 400-volt and 800-volt charging is supported. Hyundai’s E-GMP platform offers 800V charging as standard, along with 400V charging, without the need for additional adapters.
The interior appears bright and open, supporting extensive reclining seating with leg supports similar to those found in the Nio ES8.
As of this writing, pricing has not been released. However, with generous government rebates of up to $7,500 available to Hyundai, pricing is expected to be competitive. The mid-sized fully electric vehicle segment is heating up. 2021 may be a watershed year for consumers looking to purchase a vehicle of this type.

Archer Secures New Backing
and United Airlines Orders
Archer, one of several promising electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) companies, received significant financial backing this month from Atlas Crest Investment Corporation. Archer and Atlas announced “they have entered into a definitive agreement for a business combination that would result in Archer becoming a publicly listed company. The post-closing company, Archer, is anticipated to be listed on the NYSE under the ticker symbol "ACHR.”
A January 13th article in “The Driven” indicated that Fiat Chrysler has also agreed to further the development of Archer’s eVTOL aircraft by leveraging FCA’s supply chain, materials, design, and engineering know-how. Archer has also agreed with United Airlines. The airline is seeking to partner with leading technology companies that will decarbonize air travel. United has placed an order, subject to United’s business and operating requirements, for $1 billion of Archer’s aircraft, with an option for an additional $500 million of aircraft. This could give travelers a quick, economical, and low-emission way to reach airports within its major hubs by 2024.
It will be interesting to see which companies will lead in the coming year or two as power constraints are overcome and short-term regional and inner-city travel market demand takes off. Various companies, including Joby Aviation, Hyundai, Uber’s joint venture, Kitty Hawk, Lillium, and EHang, are all set for takeoff.

High Drama and Perseverance
on the Red Planet
On February 18th, 2021, NASA’s Perseverance rover touched down on the surface of Mars in a dramatic fashion. Utilizing a new sky crane deployment method, the landing involved hundreds of critical steps to culminate in the successful deployment of the rover. NASA and JPL staff were jubilant as images confirmed the success of the complex maneuvering that had only been visualized in impressive animation sequences.
Bird’s eye view from sky crane as Perseverance was deployed
In addition to carrying out an intricate and innovative landing sequence, NASA has developed a helicopter named Ingenuity that will be capable of flying through the Martian atmosphere —a significant accomplishment. The atmosphere on Mars is about 1% the thickness of Earth’s, making flight of the probe a serious challenge.
NASA Ingenuity Helicopter
The successful landing will allow the largest of NASA’s Rovers to complete a range of missions in terrain previously unreachable by prior rovers. According to NASA, the rover will characterize the planet’s geology and past climate and be the first mission to collect and store Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust). Subsequent NASA missions, in cooperation with ESA (the European Space Agency), will send spacecraft to Mars to collect these cached samples from the surface and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis.

Texans Use New Ford F-150s to Power Homes During Blackout
While the new Ford F-150 may seem largely evolutionary in its design, several innovations are incorporated into the new model. These include lie-flat seats and reconfigurable workspaces in both the center console and tailgate areas.
Perhaps most impressive is the ability for the new truck to generate onboard power. Many Texans experiencing brutal winter conditions last week were using this innovation to address portions of their home power needs during the statewide blackout. It's good to see that vehicles can be used in this manner in critical conditions. This kind of utility results from applying design thinking to keep the customer's needs in mind throughout the design process.
The PowerBoost Hybrid truck is equipped with the more robust 7.2-kW Pro Power Onboard Generator power supply, which Ford says can simultaneously power items such as a plasma cutter, TIG welder, air compressor, angle grinder, and work light for 32 hours. A 2.4-kW generator is standard on PowerBoost hybrids and comes with two 120-volt, 20-amp outlets in the bed that can power two heavy-duty tools for 85 hours straight on one tank of fuel; the 7.2-kW unit also adds a 240-volt outlet.
In addition to helping hard-working folks on job sites, this kind of innovation is proving essential in the face of increasingly unpredictable climatic events.

USPS Unveils
New Postal Delivery Vehicle
The United States Postal Service has selected Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Defense to produce the bulk of next-generation postal delivery vehicles. While many had hoped that most new vehicles would be electric, initially, only 10% of the new fleet will be battery-electric vehicles. With considerations for future retrofitting to electric capabilities, the Postal Service noted that some vehicles may be retrofittable as electric power platforms and charging standards continue to emerge.
A quick (re)designbivouac based on electric skateboard form factor
The 10-year contract commences in 2023, allowing the current administration to potentially make modifications to the design or balance of the fleet. Current postal vehicles have been on the road for as long as 30 years, and lately several have caught on fire.
The new design is far friendlier to postal workers. Features such as standing-height loading bays and air conditioning are new additions. Safety features are also updated with extensive cameras providing better situational awareness, and features like airbags and forward collision are included. New telematics packages will also be available, hopefully empowering the fleet to operate more efficiently and safely.

It employs a “zero layer” approach, placing content within easy reach rather than under a traditional menu structure. Pioneered in large part by Tesla, it will be interesting to see if this interface approach continues to be adopted by other automotive manufacturers, who have more display surface area to work with. More attention is being paid to passenger-side user experiences as displays become more affordable.

Trump Pardons Anthony Levandowski
Levandowski, a former Google engineer, pleaded guilty to stealing secret technology related to self-driving cars from the company before becoming the head of Uber’s rival unit. In August, a judge in San Francisco sentenced Levandowski to 18 months in prison but said he could enter custody once the COVID-19 pandemic had subsided.
The judge, William Alsup, who has been involved in Silicon Valley litigation for nearly five decades, described Levandowski’s conviction as “the biggest trade secret crime I have ever seen.” He has been pardoned.

Hummer EV: Recharging an Icon
GM’s latest push for zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion future includes an iconic and ironic entry. GMC recently announced that the GMW Hummer EV will be available in Fall 2021.
GM’s ambitious vision for a future of zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion includes a bold—and somewhat ironic—addition to its lineup. In a striking blend of heritage and innovation, GMC announced that the all-electric Hummer EV would be available starting Fall 2021. Once known as a symbol of excess and fuel consumption, the Hummer has been reimagined as a cutting-edge electric supertruck, capable of delivering both off-road prowess and zero-emission performance.
This reintroduction of the Hummer underscores GM’s strategy to electrify even its most iconic and rugged vehicles, demonstrating that sustainability and performance can coexist. With features like CrabWalk mode, an adaptive air suspension, and up to 1,000 horsepower, the Hummer EV isn’t just a nod to the past—it’s a leap into the future of mobility, wrapped in unmistakable style and power.
When the GMC Hummer EV goes on sale in the Fall of 2021, it will be a bold step in reshaping the Hummer brand. The concept vehicle is impressive, touting an estimated all-electric range of over 350 miles per charge. Production vehicles will charge to a range of nearly 100 miles in 10 minutes using high-capacity charging stations. An impressive suspension supports the latest electric incarnation of the Hummer. The Hummer EV’s “extract mode” can raise the vehicle 6 inches to overcome obstacles. Like the Jeep Wrangler and the soon-to-be-launched Ford Bronco, the Hummer EV will offer an open-air roof capability. Given that it is an EV, it achieves this with more utility, thanks to a generous storage area located up front, where an internal combustion engine once was. This large “frunk” conveniently accommodates the glass roof panels.
The HummerEv’s Extract Mode should raises the bar for super trucks.
A water fording capability of 32” is impressive for an electric vehicle.
A “Watts to Freedom” mode lowers the vehicle's suspension, conditions the batteries, and accelerates the Hummer EV to 60 mph in approximately 3 seconds. That is remarkable for a vehicle of this size and weight, which is partially how the Hummer EV earns its “Super Truck” status. Other innovative features include a “crab mode” that allows the vehicle to travel diagonally. This is a helpful capability to have in some off-road situations. The latter feature is made possible through the platform’s four-wheel steering capability, which should also help with any turning radius challenges in parking lots. GM’s “Ultravision” placement of cameras underneath the vehicle and extensive underbody protection also aid in off-roading activity. It will be interesting to see how Rivian and Tesla counter with their offerings.
Using “Crab Mode” the HummerEV can avoid obstacles in new ways.
Four wheel steering should significantly aid the vehicle’s turning radius.
Negotiating tough trails should be as easy as having a spotter when using Ultravision’s included underbody mounted cameras.
The concept vehicle is well executed visually. The lines are solid; overall, the truck looks substantial and anchored. The overall aesthetic could be described as “attainably futuristic,” or perhaps what one would expect from a few cycles of truck evolution. Tesla’s Cybertruck, by comparison, is radical and polarizing but very unexpected. Rivian’s entry appears somewhat conservative in comparison to the Hummer EV. Overall, GM appears to have done its homework here, positioning the Hummer EV between these two, adding entries to the electric truck market with progressive styling.

Innovation continues inside the vehicle. The display visuals are more advanced than the exterior. They are reminiscent of what one would expect in Bladerunner vehicles; perhaps this is partly due to their partnership with Epic Games and the use of the Unreal Engine to render graphics. The visuals are more dynamic and video game-like than many human-machine interfaces in vehicles today. Just how close GM will come to delivering on the concept vehicle interfaces remains to be seen. They have previously farmed some of this work with varied results.
Then again, there is evidence that perhaps GM has realized just how essential interfaces are regarding the relationship with a vehicle. For example, in addition to the Hummer EV interface work, significant interface progress is evident in other divisions, including Cadillac. The concept displayed in their Cadillac Lyric is leaps ahead of what the company is shipping today. Let’s hope that this is more than just concept work. Similarly, if the interior quality of the Hummer EV is as solid as that of the new Corvette C8, it should be an impressive truck. The Corvette C8 interface is arguably superior to that found in the latest Ferrari Roma. All these qualities will undoubtedly be needed, given that the Hummer EV Edition 1 will run around $112,595.
Cadillac Lyriq is set to launch in late 2022 as a 2023 model
Cadillac Lyriq concept vehicle interface is a dramatic step ahead in terms of instrumentation graphics for General Motors.
GM’s new Ultium battery system will scale to accommodate a range of vehicle architectures. In the case of the Hummer EV, the battery pack will consist of two stacks of battery compartments. Each battery compartment holds thin packets of battery chemistry, thus eliminating the weight of traditional cell battery enclosures.
Overall, it is great to see companies embracing the benefits of electric mobility and committing to a more sustainable future. In addition to new vehicles launching over the next few years that will utilize the Ultium platform, GM plans to adopt more sustainable ground distribution. Their BrightDrop freight management offering and the electric delivery fleet are already being prototyped with FedEx. Along with their new corporate identity, GM seems to be on a new mission, pursuing sustainable mobility at a faster pace. Depending on how their Ultium platform is applied across their fleet, and if Hummer EV pricing can help subsidize innovations for other vehicles, it could be a future that is not only great for trucks but also for the planet.

Revelling in the Revel for 2021
As a designer, every once in a while, you see a company that creates something that you hoped one of your clients would take on as an outcome of your work. Such is the case with the 2021 Winnebago Revel.
As a designer, every once in a while, you see a company that creates something that you hoped one of your clients would take on as an outcome of your work. Such is the case with the 2021 Winnebago Revel. Winnebago has been continually improving the 4x4-capable Class B recreational vehicle since its launch a few years ago. This is the sign of a company that cares about its customers. Drawing on numerous insights gained from speaking with current Revel owners, the 2021 Revel features several thoughtful updates, along with one major game changer.
Among some smaller, yet still meaningful updates, the table in the sliding door area is now cable-mounted. The angle can be easily adjusted to accommodate various needs, depending on the level of your campsite. Winnebago also moved the refrigerator (which ideally would be a larger unit with a larger freezer) to be forward-facing. This provides easy access from outside the coach, making loading easier. The rear passenger seat now has one three-point seatbelt, and the bed conversion feature has been removed based on consumer feedback. A more flexible lagoon-style table has been added along with a small but functional in-floor storage area behind the driver’s seat.
Counter space is cleaned up and expanded by including a removable induction cooking appliance that neatly stores in the upper galley drawer. This provides more counter space, and Revel owners can cook outside the vehicle on the side table, which was apparently another popular request from current Revel owners. A 110 outlet close to the sliding door shows further attention to detail. This changed layout helps keep cooking odors and moisture from accumulating inside the RV. Under-bed lighting in the rear gear garage area, an added storage bag under the height-adjustable bed, and various storage nets located throughout the rear of the coach are nice additional touches.
The most significant change for 2021 is the addition of two large-capacity lithium batteries. They are located inside the rear gear garage of the coach. This welcome update enables the vehicle's rear air conditioning unit to run for extended periods using only the lithium batteries. This is a breakthrough for those RVing in warmer climates. Lichtsinn RV, a large Winnebago Dealer, recently conducted a test on a hot and humid Iowa day that reached a maximum temperature of 94 degrees. They were able to run the new Coleman air conditioner on and off using the thermostat for just about 6 hours, keeping the coach interior at a comfortable 75 degrees.
The batteries are stored under a nicely designed and vented panel on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Thermostatically monitored heat blankets ensure that the batteries will function and can be charged when operating in colder climates. The addition of a dedicated alternator in the engine bay helps top up the lithium batteries in about 2 hours of highway driving. Rooftop solar panel support and the option to expand solar charging capability with exterior panels add more boondocking charging capability. Another benefit of using lithium batteries and incorporating them into the Revel is weight savings. Winnebago saved so much weight by switching from nickel batteries to lithium ones that they were able to reintroduce a spare tire, which had previously been eliminated.
Ground clearance has also been significantly improved. Finally, the water tank has also been moved inboard on the passenger side of the garage bay. While the city hookup is now located inside the rear of the vehicle, rather than on the exterior side, which may be inconvenient for those who rely on city hookups in campsites, the water panel is far more intuitive. These changes make the 2021 Winnebago Revel even more capable of facing the extremes of all-season RVing. We designed a similar system with one of our clients several years ago. It remains to be seen whether they will proceed with our work. Clearly, to Winnebago’s credit, they see the value in such an approach. It is great to see them listening to consumers, which has empowered them to create a segment-defining vehicle designed for more adventurous 4x4 camping and to keep it current and desirable with meaningful updating.

Perhaps the most extensive overview available at the time of posting this entry is the one from Lichtsinn, which provides a helpful 1-hour and 25-minute orientation of the revised model for 2021, available to view here.
