The Price is Right (Too Right?)

The Slate Truck's affordability is arguably its most surprising feature in a world where Rivians, Teslas, and Hummers dominate the electric truck scene at $70k and beyond, getting a robust EV pickup under $45k sounds almost too good to be true. And maybe it is. While Slate says they’ve partnered with contract manufacturers and are working toward production, history tells us that building cars—even “simple” ones—is one of a startup's most complex undertakings.

We've seen hopeful companies like Lordstown, Bollinger, and Canoo announce, delay, and sometimes collapse entirely. The gap between prototype and production is vast, and it’s littered with great ideas that never left the factory floor.

The Styling Dilemma

For all of Slate’s practical promise, it’s hard to ignore the elephant in the garage: the truck just isn’t that good-looking. While styling is subjective, the Slate Truck’s form feels like a design-by-function exercise that didn’t get much love in the aesthetics department. It’s boxy, sure—but not in a classic, purposeful Land Cruiser way. It’s angular without being aggressive. Flat-faced without being charming. The proportions feel slightly awkward, more industrial concept than finished product.

If Slate's goal is mass-market appeal, they may need to give the design a second pass. It doesn’t have to be flashy, but it could be better resolved, even if you mainly want this truck for what it does, not how it looks in your driveway.

Final Thoughts: Bold Ideas, Big Questions

The Slate Truck deserves credit for addressing real needs: utility, flexibility, and affordability. It’s easy to root for a vehicle that aims to serve rather than impress. The modularity is clever. The pricing is ambitious. The ethos—openness, repairability, adaptability—is the thinking we need more of in automotive design. However, the road from concept to customer is long, especially in an industry where many have failed trying to do less. Adding a somewhat underwhelming design that may not win hearts at first glance makes the picture murkier.

Slate has the right idea. Now we wait to see if they can build it and at what price.

Verdict: Love the concept, but skeptical of the execution. The styling doesn't help.

The bivouac hopes that Tesla won’t stop with the Cybertruck and will grow its lineup with a more accessible and mainstream mid-sized or compact truck.

Despite arriving much later than promised, with less range and a higher price than Elon Musk initially announced in 2019, the Cybertruck is still a remarkable engineering achievement that deserves recognition.

Looking ahead, expanding its lineup with a more accessible, mainstream mid-sized or compact electric truck would open the door to an even broader audience, staying true to Tesla’s mission of accelerating the transition to sustainable transportation.

Tesla may still be able to produce a mass appeal mid-sized electric pickup truck.

 


Tesla initially set out to produce electric vehicles at an attainable price to drive large-scale environmental change (looking at you, $30,000 Model III). The design above envisions a mid-sized truck that aligns with Tesla’s brand—progressive yet practical, offering a mainstream alternative to its more radical designs. Instead of engineering stainless steel exoskeletons and Falcon-wing doors—bold innovations that pushed the boundaries of manufacturing but led to delays for the Model X and Cybertruck—Tesla now has an opportunity to create a vehicle with broad market appeal.

The mid-sized truck segment presents an ideal opportunity for such a move. Long overlooked, this category is now experiencing a resurgence as OEMs introduce fresh, compelling options. Today’s mid-sized trucks, roughly the size of full-sized models from 20 years ago, offer superior maneuverability on tight off-road trails while being far more practical for daily urban driving. With enough power and capability for everyday tasks—whether hauling gear for a weekend adventure, picking up a load of mulch, towing a reasonable payload, or even converting the bed into an overlanding setup—these trucks are ideal for modern lifestyles. Meanwhile, the rise of compact unibody pickups like the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz further reinforces consumer demand for practical, city-friendly trucks with open-bed utility.

This resurgence gives Tesla a golden opportunity to deliver an elegant, well-sized electric truck for the masses. Rather than relying on sharp-edged, dystopian styling and exotic, costly materials, Tesla can return to its strengths: intelligent vehicle packaging, lightweight design, parts reduction, industry-leading battery efficiency, and best-in-class charging infrastructure. A sleek, practical, and affordable mid-sized truck would not only dominate this growing segment but also meaningfully contribute to Tesla’s founding mission—to accelerate the world’s transition to electric vehicles.

When Tesla first set out to reimagine the pickup, the electric truck space was heating up. In 2017, excitement around electric vehicle (EV) pickups was skyrocketing—GMC was reviving the Hummer as an all-electric supertruck, Ford surprised the industry with the rapid launch of the F-150 Lightning, and startups like Lordstown and Canoo were flooding the market with ambitious concepts. Tesla’s bold, genre-defying Cybertruck was a response to this wave of innovation. However, with the mid-sized and compact truck market thriving, the company has a second chance to create a truck that blends cutting-edge technology with real-world practicality—something Tesla does better than anyone.

A review of EV trucks launched to date reveals how difficult it can be to introduce a new design language to accompany a new type of vehicle in an established category. Rivian introduced a quirky, playful persona with its headlight facia, which is also somewhat polarizing. GMC relied on signature elements from the Hummer brand, ironically known for its previous range of gas-guzzling vehicles. Ford played it safe with an evolutionary design from their proven F-150 line. The Lordstown’s Endurance* evokes a “Stormtrooper” aesthetic for many.

The efforts of other OEMs to crack the code on how to evolve the entrenched aesthetic of the pickup and the rendering exercise resulting in the image above give new appreciation to what it takes to move a vehicle segment forward. That said, one can miss a brief entirely if a design is too progressive. Let’s hope that if Tesla chooses to move into the mid-sized truck segment, a “Mini-Me” Cypertruck will not be in the offing.

* Lordstown filed for bankruptcy in June of 2023. The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged bankrupt Lordstown Motors with misleading investors about the sales prospects of its Endurance electric pickup truck. Lordstown has agreed to pay $25.5 million as a result — money that the SEC says will go towards settling a number of pending class action lawsuits against the company.

Revelling in the Revel for 2021

As a designer, every once in a while, you see a company that creates something that you hoped one of your clients would take on as an outcome of your work. Such is the case with the 2021 Winnebago Revel.

As a designer, every once in a while, you see a company that creates something that you hoped one of your clients would take on as an outcome of your work. Such is the case with the 2021 Winnebago Revel. Winnebago has been continually improving the 4x4-capable Class B recreational vehicle since its launch a few years ago. This is the sign of a company that cares about its customers. Drawing on numerous insights gained from speaking with current Revel owners, the 2021 Revel features several thoughtful updates, along with one major game changer.


Among some smaller, yet still meaningful updates, the table in the sliding door area is now cable-mounted. The angle can be easily adjusted to accommodate various needs, depending on the level of your campsite. Winnebago also moved the refrigerator (which ideally would be a larger unit with a larger freezer) to be forward-facing. This provides easy access from outside the coach, making loading easier. The rear passenger seat now has one three-point seatbelt, and the bed conversion feature has been removed based on consumer feedback. A more flexible lagoon-style table has been added along with a small but functional in-floor storage area behind the driver’s seat.

Counter space is cleaned up and expanded by including a removable induction cooking appliance that neatly stores in the upper galley drawer. This provides more counter space, and Revel owners can cook outside the vehicle on the side table, which was apparently another popular request from current Revel owners. A 110 outlet close to the sliding door shows further attention to detail. This changed layout helps keep cooking odors and moisture from accumulating inside the RV. Under-bed lighting in the rear gear garage area, an added storage bag under the height-adjustable bed, and various storage nets located throughout the rear of the coach are nice additional touches.

The most significant change for 2021 is the addition of two large-capacity lithium batteries. They are located inside the rear gear garage of the coach. This welcome update enables the vehicle's rear air conditioning unit to run for extended periods using only the lithium batteries. This is a breakthrough for those RVing in warmer climates. Lichtsinn RV, a large Winnebago Dealer, recently conducted a test on a hot and humid Iowa day that reached a maximum temperature of 94 degrees. They were able to run the new Coleman air conditioner on and off using the thermostat for just about 6 hours, keeping the coach interior at a comfortable 75 degrees.

The batteries are stored under a nicely designed and vented panel on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Thermostatically monitored heat blankets ensure that the batteries will function and can be charged when operating in colder climates. The addition of a dedicated alternator in the engine bay helps top up the lithium batteries in about 2 hours of highway driving. Rooftop solar panel support and the option to expand solar charging capability with exterior panels add more boondocking charging capability. Another benefit of using lithium batteries and incorporating them into the Revel is weight savings. Winnebago saved so much weight by switching from nickel batteries to lithium ones that they were able to reintroduce a spare tire, which had previously been eliminated.

Ground clearance has also been significantly improved. Finally, the water tank has also been moved inboard on the passenger side of the garage bay. While the city hookup is now located inside the rear of the vehicle, rather than on the exterior side, which may be inconvenient for those who rely on city hookups in campsites, the water panel is far more intuitive. These changes make the 2021 Winnebago Revel even more capable of facing the extremes of all-season RVing. We designed a similar system with one of our clients several years ago. It remains to be seen whether they will proceed with our work. Clearly, to Winnebago’s credit, they see the value in such an approach. It is great to see them listening to consumers, which has empowered them to create a segment-defining vehicle designed for more adventurous 4x4 camping and to keep it current and desirable with meaningful updating.
